XD School

Project Overview
XD School is an amazing paid apprentice program originally started to increase the quality and volume of UX designers in the industry. In 2017 I took over the program an updated the curriculum – incorporated modern processes and tooling. I returned in 2018 and again revamped the program to include real-world clients and projects.
Role
Head of School
Client
Huge Inc

Approach.

Ride The Wave.
10 weeks is not a long time to become proficient in everything a UX designer needs to know, so every day counted. Lectures, design challenges, presentations, readings and projects were all there to whip students into shape.
Core Curriculum
The core curriculum was written over several years by many different amazing designers at Huge and it provided the foundation of skills found in a good UX-er. I revised, updated and added several blocks where I felt it needed updating.

The Students
Together with a small panel of current designers at Huge, we poured through hundreds of applications and chose our new students. We prioritized talent & diversity during this process.
The Times They Are A-Changin'
I added several curriculum blocks including software prototyping, programing with Javascript and physical computing.
Real World Projects
For my second year leading XD School, I arranged for the final projects to take place with real world clients. I felt that in order properly know what it's like to work at Huge or any other agency, the projects needed to be real. The students would likely agree that they learned the most in those final weeks of school.

Let's build something.
